Why
is it happening?
The
digital TV switchover is Government
policy. It will mean that almost
everyone will be able to receive
digital TV through an aerial (Freeview).
Digital
TV also uses less broadcast space
which means that after switchover,
there will be more room for new
services such as wireless broadband,
local TV and High Definition
Television (HDTV).
To
keep your TV service, you will need to
convert your TVs to digital before
your area’s switchover date.
Switching
to digital doesn’t need to be
expensive. The price will vary
depending on the digital choices you
make. The things to consider are:
- The
number of TVs in your home you
choose to convert.
- Whether
you choose to pay one upfront cost
or pay monthly for a subscription
service.
- If
you choose to buy a standard
digital box, an HD digital box, an
integrated digital TV (iDTV), or a
digital TV recorder (which will
also convert your TV to
digital).
- If
you choose to subscribe additional
channels (e.g. movies and sports)
or services (e.g. broadband,
telephone or HD TV).
There
are lots of different ways to choose
to go digital. You can take a
subscription service where the
installation is done for you. You can
visit your local retailer and either
get a digital Freeview box from a
retailer such as Currys to convert
your existing TV or get a new TV with
Freeview built in. Other ways are to
subscribe to Sky or
one of the cable services.
